In addition to oiled wildlife response, the Wildlife Center of Texas is able to respond to any natural disaster through our affiliation with the Houston SPCA. Our facilities can be powered by backup generators during extended power outages and we can house staff on-site during an emergency. Through our extensive network of individual permitted rehabilitators and wildlife care organizations, we are also able to outsource injured and orphaned wildlife to unaffected areas.
After Hurricane Ike in 2008, the Wildlife Center of Texas received ~600 baby squirrels in the week following the storm.
In 2011, the Wildlife Center took in 15 baby Brown Pelicans that were blown off an island in Mississippi after Tropical Storm Lee.
In December of 2014, we responded to an event in Galveston where more than 100 Brown Pelicans were emaciated or had been injured by fishing equipment.
After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, our center was able to care for more than 600 animals of 70 different species on top of our usual patients.
